Why political commentary in game reviews is a good thing
A few thoughts on “objectivity” and bandwagons.
Reviewers, we’re told, are far too “political” nowadays. Rather than confining themselves to the elements of the game that make it fun or not fun, they throw in paragraphs about gender or race or some other topic that has no place in “objective” criticism. Reviewers, we’re told, should keep their ideological persuasions out of their work, should avoid “imposing” their views on the apparently ultra-susceptible blank tablets that are their readers. Instead, they should stick to talking about the graphics, or how the abilities lock together, or how large the levels are. Nice, safe, neutral talking points, like display resolution and frame rate.
