With 100,000 Steam wishlists after 3 days, Cat Parents devs “never imagined” this response, and I’m surprised they’re surprised: it’s a game where you “save cats, give them love, care, and a place to call home”

Cat Parents developer Gaze in Games is in disbelief after its cute and cuddly cat-saving sim was added to 100,000 Steam wishlists after just three days, but as a noted cat lover, I’m not at all surprised by its success.

Per the Steam product page for Cat Parents, this is a game where you “save cats, give them love, care, and a place to call home,” “become a true cat parent alone or with your friend,” and “discover what true happiness feels like.” Again, why are we acting surprised that people are into this idea?

Over on LinkedIn (via PC Gamer), Gaze in Games CEO Solvita Zacha pretends the studio doesn’t know exactly what it’s going with this game.

“Three days ago, we finally announced Cat Parents, a game we’ve been dreaming up and pouring our passion into,” says Zacha. “A game we’d love to play ourselves, and we never imagined that our little dream would spark interest in so many people.”

In all seriousness, 100,000 wishlists in three days is definitely an accomplishment worth celebrating for any developer, but especially an indie studio with only a couple of releases under its belt. Ironically, one of its previous games is a full-blown horror game with some legitimately unsettling artwork. I should also note that both of the studio’s games have hundreds of reviews and “very positive” Steam ratings.

Anyway, back to Cat Parents. The main objective of the game is to save stray cats from perilous situations (just seeing that will be the hardest part of the game for me), and then wash them, feed them, treat any illnesses they might have, and then foster them until you decide it’s time to find them a new home… unless you want to keep them, and then you get to work building them the ultimate “cat paradise” with plenty of things for them to climb around and hide in. If you know cats, you know they’ll settle for nothing less.

I’ll never understand why anyone would be surprised to see this premise, but Zacha says “those millions of views, and 100k wishlists and all expectations – are a huge responsibility and a huge trust.” The game is “coming soon,” according to Steam.
