Stolen goods? An hour in the world of Eidos Montreal’s Thief

Ed goes hands-on with the reboot, and comes away worried.

“Good artists copy, great artists steal,” the late Steve Jobs once remarked, ostensibly quoting Pablo Picasso. That’s to say, great artists are those who don’t merely pinch off with but take creative ownership of each other’s ideas. It’s a statement with an appropriately chequered and elusive history – almost as chequered and elusive as that of Eidos Montreal’s Thief reboot, a much-delayed, often conflicted yet quietly promising first-person action-adventure that at time settles for aping competitors, and at others strives to rise above them.
