I took GCSE and A-level art at school, and as far as I can recall (it was a few years ago, mind), I don’t think I ever once painted, drew or even scribbled on a piece of plain white paper. For my final fine art pieces, I chose to paint on slate roof tiles, on discarded pieces of plastic, and even, finally, on a cross section of an old tree in our garden that my dad had taken a chainsaw to.
