Last look at Sunset Overdrive – gaudy stylings mask a complex game

Joe goes hands-on with Insomniac’s open world raver in the run-up to our review.

Hidden depth is Sunset Overdrive’s strong suit. It’s a game that seems to revel in the surface level, from its neon skyscapes and pre-school colours jostling to dilate your pupils, to a stuffed weapon-select wheel – the most overpowered, unrealistic set of equipment since the final scene of Boogie Nights. And yet beneath lies a wavelike gut of systems – chewy chunks of interlocking customisation and skill play churning underneath that nu-rave attire.
